About This Course
As immigration practitioners, we often create checklists instead of scenes, providing bland facts instead of painting pictures for judges and USCIS adjudicators. But judges and adjudicators are people, too, and the human brain is wired for story and not checklists.
This 1.5 hour webinar begins by discussing the neuroscience of storytelling. Why does storytelling matter in immigration law? Once we have laid the foundation for storytelling, we will have an interactive discussion about specific storytelling techniques in the context of asylum cases.
Erich Straub
Erich C. Straub is an attorney concentrating in family-based immigration and deportation defense. He has been licensed since 1994. He has been listed in Best Lawyers in America since 2006, including being named "Lawyer of the Year" for Milwaukee in 2016 and 2018. He served on the AILA Board of Governors from 2007 to 2009. He is a former public defender and founding member of the annual Trial College at the Clinic at Sharma-Crawford.
Professor Cathren Page
Cathren Page is a tenured Associate Professor of Law at Mercer Law where she teaches legal writing courses. Her scholarship focuses on applied legal storytelling and has been published in legal publications, including the top 10% of Law Reviews. She is a member of the Legal Writing Institute, where she is co-chair of the new member committee.
